Primary Function

The incumbent performs testing procedures on various types of equipment. This person also documents testing process and reports results.

Responsibilities
  • Support engineers and business unit teams through testing, sample preparation, and analysis of materials for water heater and water treatment applications, including:
    • Applying coatings to components and performing corrosion testing
    • Performing failure analysis on different materials, including coatings, metals, and plastics
    • Performing material life testing under different conditions
  • Set up, monitor, and tear down lab equipment for tests and experiments in an efficient and accurate manner.
  • Work with engineers and other technicians to develop improved testing and experimental processes and methods.
  • Write reports to document testing setup and results, and to update personnel on equipment, laboratory, or project status.
  • Inventory, order, store, and distribute material, laboratory supplies, and equipment spare parts.
  • Maintain a safe and clean workspace
  • Keeping abreast with advances in materials analysis techniques and industry standards
  • Support laboratory staff in other labs as needed
Role Specific Responsibilities
Qualifications
  • AAS or BS degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Materials Engineering or related field preferred, or 1 year of previous laboratory experience
  • An aptitude for and interest in hands-on work of a highly detailed nature
  • Demonstrated knowledge of how to use hand tools, power tools, and test equipment used in the area
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety practices
  • Conscientious & dependable, with the ability to work on small teams as well as independently.
  • Ability to perform routine mathematical calculations and chemical analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient with personal computers and MS Office Products (Word, Excel, etc.)

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with coatings applications and testing
  • Experience with failure analysis and metallography
  • Experience with corrosion testing
  • Experience with mounting and polishing metal samples
  • Familiar with microscopy, materials testing equipment, and materials analysis
